WhatsApp’s Latest Update Fixes One of the Most Annoying Things About Group Chats

Spread the love

If you are part of a few WhatsApp groups, you probably know the feeling. You open a group after a couple of hours and find 147 unread messages. Somewhere in that mountain of messages is the address for tomorrow’s meeting, the restaurant everyone agreed on or that one important document someone shared.

Good luck finding it.

WhatsApp seems to have recognised this everyday problem. The messaging platform is rolling out four new features designed to make group conversations easier to manage and, hopefully, a little less chaotic.

Here is what is changing.

1. Pin important messages indefinitely

Until now, WhatsApp users could pin group messages for a limited period, choosing between 24 hours, seven days or 30 days.

The new update introduces an option to keep important messages pinned indefinitely.

Think about a family group where someone has shared travel details, a residential society group with important maintenance information or an office group with project instructions.

Instead of repeatedly sharing the same information, members can keep an important message accessible at the top of the conversation.

It is a small change, but one that could save quite a bit of scrolling.

2. Share chat history even after someone joins

This is another genuinely useful addition.

Previously, WhatsApp allowed users to share recent chat history when adding someone to a group. However, if you forgot to do that, the new member could find themselves entering a conversation without knowing what everyone was discussing.

The updated feature allows recent messages to be shared even after the person has joined.

You can tap the new member’s name in the group conversation and share the relevant recent messages.

WhatsApp says these shared messages remain protected by end-to-end encryption.

For office groups, college groups and family conversations, this could make joining an ongoing discussion considerably easier.

3. Group Status is coming

WhatsApp is also introducing a way to share Status updates specifically with members of a particular group.

Imagine sharing a holiday update with your family group without having to select individual contacts, or posting an update for your running club without making it visible to your wider Status audience.

Group members can view, react to and share their own updates.

Like regular WhatsApp Status updates, these posts disappear after 24 hours.

The feature gives users more control over who sees what, particularly when they belong to several different groups.

4. A new filter for mentions and replies

This one could be a lifesaver for people who are constantly added to busy groups.

WhatsApp is introducing a dedicated filter that brings together unread group conversations where someone has mentioned you or directly replied to you.

It also covers messages using the @all mention.

Instead of opening every unread group and searching for your name, you can focus on conversations that actually require your attention.

For anyone managing multiple office, school or community groups, this could be particularly handy.

When will these features reach your phone?

WhatsApp has announced the features and says they are rolling out. Availability may vary depending on the account, platform and app version.

If you don’t see them immediately, check for an update through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and give the rollout some time.

Is WhatsApp finally making group chats better?

These are not revolutionary features, and that is probably a good thing.

WhatsApp does not need to reinvent group messaging. It needs to fix the little frustrations that users encounter every day.

Permanent message pins, better onboarding for new members and a dedicated mentions filter are practical improvements. Group Status is also an interesting addition for people who want to share updates with smaller, more relevant audiences.

Our take: The permanent pin and mentions filter are the two features we are most excited about. WhatsApp groups are unlikely to become less noisy overnight, but at least finding the important stuff should get easier.
