The cellphone industry went to Barcelona to “show off the latest and greatest phones” and, once again, hardware took center stage. But, Victoria Shannon (New York Times) points out, “software is growing in importance as smartphones, capable of accessing the Web, become more popular.” So, Shannon continues, “it was no surprise that many of the phones were iPhone clones — with touch screens, sleek flat shapes and spare software interfaces. Apple was able to make a phone that paid equal attention to the software and the hardware. And the rest of the industry was following suit here.”
Communications provider AT&T and mobile device manufacturer Palm have announced plans to launch the Palm Centro. The device, officials indicate, was designed for consumers needing to multi-task a variety of activities throughout the day. The Centro features voice mail, text messaging, instant messaging, e-mail and Web capabilities.
Apple Inc., the maker of the iPod media player, cut the price on the Shuffle model by 38 percent after shipment growth for the devices slowed last quarter.
The 1-gigabyte iPod Shuffle, the company’s smallest model, will cost $49, Cupertino, California-based Apple said today in a statement. The old price was $79. Apple also introduced a version with double the storage for $69.
